It’s super easy to get stuck in a vicious circle of learning.
The trap is – you feel that you have to learn more to escape the trap.
A self perpetuating paradox of learning.
That’s not to say learning is bad, I’m a great believer in life-long learning.
But when there’s no actual DOING, then it really renders the learning bit quite useless.
The thing is, when we actually come to the DOING bit – there’s a new element.
Fear. Risk. Unpleasantness.
What if… [fill in the blank].
Self doubt, fear of getting it wrong, looking like a numpty are all motivators to sink back into the comfort zone of learning.
“I’ll just read a little more on the subject, then I’ll feel better”.
Nope, you’ll still have to face that fear.
The truth is, facing the fear, overcoming it (the unpleasantness hardly ever lasts as long as you think) actual DOING is far more valuable in terms of learning.
Yes, those things are good – but it’s through the application of what we learn that we actually REALLY learn.
Like driving. You learn, you fail, you learn and eventually you pass your driving test and off you go.
Then you really have to learn how to drive.
By DOING.
Knowing is a waste of brain space if the knowledge isn’t applied.
All you really need is to know what value you offer to people.
How what you do is going to help a specific group of people in their lives.
Once you have that, you can figure out the rest as you go about the DOING.
Do > Learn > Practice – Repeat.
